I couldn’t study medicine in my country. That was the only reason why I came to Lithuania, to study what I always wanted. But I had to study in another language which I hadn’t mastered yet; the language which many Spanish people are terrified of and totally avoid it if they can. And in my situation there was no way I could avoid it.

My first year in Lithuania was an adaptation period. Back then, I was just a kid and I had never travelled before to any other country, so everything was shocking as many things and situations were different from the ones in my country (obviously). I must not give 2 kisses when saying hello to someone, you either hug or shake hands; can you imagine how weird it was trying to give kisses at the beginning??? Another thing is that Spanish people are usually loud when talking, so I had my scoldings for doing so when I was in a bus or a trolleybus (labai atsiprašau!!!). And being a football lover didn’t help me blend in with the basketball culture here.

I usually hung out with classmates but, at the same time, I pushed myself to make friends with local people in order to practice English more and more. I really couldn’t say many words or even understand what people said. However, somehow at the end of the first year, I noticed how my English improved. As for Lithuanian, it improved from nothing to a level in which I could express myself properly! I mean, I couldn’t explain the meaning of life, but I could say how I was or, at a restaurant, I could say „please cepelinai with grybų padažu.” Surprisingly, Lithuanian is helpful when teaching some Spanish grammar to students (something I didn’t really expect).

Trying to be honest here, my first year was a very hard year because adaptation is never easy. Many people told me (and still do) how brave I was to decide to do this, not just to be in another country but also to learn English and Lithuanian while being there. I do not think braveness is all you need (that’s just something extra, because I was terrified when I came here), what you need is something that I see every day in my students and the students of my colleagues, and that is the strong will and ambition to become a better version of themselves.

This was just the first year and I can tell you that every year was different. Stay tuned for more!

Kevin (the eSpanish one)

Futbolo fanas krepšinio šalyje

Man buvo 18 metų, kai išgirdau pačią baisiausią naujieną, kokią tik galėjau tuo metu išgirsti.
